We will begin by exploring the characteristics that can be recognized through our senses and careful observation: color, transparency, luster, inclusions, cut, and appearance.
You will discover that two seemingly similar gems can tell completely different stories.
UNDERSTAND
Light reveals what the eye does not always comprehend.
Gemstones interact with light in extraordinary ways.
Refraction, dispersion, pleochroism, and fluorescence are some of the phenomena that help explain why a gemstone can change, sparkle, or reveal unexpected colors.
We will also explore properties such as hardness, strength, and durability to understand that beauty is only one part of a gemstone's nature.
COMPARE
What appears the same can be profoundly different.
Natural. Synthetic. Treaty. Simulant.
Through direct comparison, you will discover how visually similar materials can have completely different natures, histories, and values.
Using gemstones and materials specially selected for the experience, you will learn to observe clues and formulate the right questions before evaluating a stone.
